Europeans celebrated New Year in Europe initially on 25th December, but later Pope Gregory III ordered for it to be celebrated it on 1st January in 1582. Up Helly Aa is a famous New Year ceremony that takes place in Northern Europe. In this ceremony, the people living in Northern Europe dress up like Vikings and parade around the main town of Lerwick. Apart from parading they are seen holding burning torchlights and casting away darkness. This unique ceremony ends with launching of a burning Viking ship and doing bonfires.
Another great tradition followed during New Year Celebrations in Europe is the tradition of First Footing. According to this tradition, only a male should step inside the house when the clocks strike 12 at midnight in order to bring good luck. The male visitor usually brings along coal, salt and bread and come saying “Lang may your lum reek” (Long may your chimney smoke.)
While celebrating New Year in Europe, you will also see the tradition to make noise to welcome the New Year. This tradition is followed to scare away the bad spirits while entering in the New Year. People do this usually by bursting massive firecrackers, blowing horns, trumpets, whistles and ringing bells. Apart from this, New Year in Europe can be celebrated in the most happening way by being a part of any of the rocking New Year European Parties.
Like in many other countries, New Year Parade is also an exciting tradition in Europe. A massive New Year Parade takes place in Rome with thousands of people waiting to witness at St.Peter's Square to receive the blessings of the Pope. New Year Parade, one of the much-awaited events during New Year in Europe is the time of the year when one can see entertainers, dancers and musicians flaunting their talent and marrying around.
